COSMOLOGIES
These images were produced with the idea of trying to pull into visibility different ideas about the shape of the world which jostle up against each other in any cosmopolitan city. These range from Western Renaissance ideas about perspective, height and depth, to the endless regeneration of space, ever cycling outwards, dissolving and reforming in Hindu cosmologies, and the infinitely repeated patterns of Islamic space which reflects the notion that Allah is infinite and everywhere.
I am indebted to Adam Hardy, Form, Transformation and Meaning in Indian Temple Architecture in Paradigms of Indian Architecture, ed. GHR Tillotson, 1998, Curzon, UK, pp 107-135, for images which influenced my own in thinking about ‘Endless Proliferation’.
